Panthers 2021 season opener countdown: 96 days to go

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers

We’re counting down the days until the Panthers kick off their 2021 season.

We’re 96 days away from the Carolina Panthers 2021 season opener, so that means today’s countdown piece is devoted to No. 96 on the roster — defensive end Austin Larkin.

Larkin began his college career at Notre Dame, but ended up transferring to Purdue. He had OK production in his two seasons with the Boilermakers: 42 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. He declared for the NFL Draft in 2018, but went undrafted.

Larkin signed with the Dallas Cowboys after the draft. He was waived early on in September and remained unsigned the rest of the 2018 season. The next season, he signed on with the Atlanta Falcons, where he ended up only playing two games, notching a single tackle in limited reps. He spent 2019 bouncing back and forth between Atlanta’s practice squad and active roster before being waived in August 2020. That’s when Carolina scooped him up and eventually added him to the active roster in October of last year. He played nine games for the Panthers and managed 12 total tackles.

Chances are Larkin is one of the lowest guys on the Panthers defensive end depth chart heading into the season. Barring some catastrophic injuries or unexpected domination on Larkin’s part, the 26-year-old will likely not make the 53-man roster this season. Depending on his eligibility, he might be a practice squad candidate again this year.
