The veteran quarterback is familiar with OC Liam Coen.
When the Buccaneers signed quarterback Baker Mayfield to a three-year, contract worth north of $100-million this offseason, all eyes were going to be on how well he’d perform this upcoming season.
Tampa Bay has since gone through several offseason programs and now sever days into training camp, curiosity on how Mayfield has looked thus far in a new offense.
So following Sunday’s training camp practice, head coach Todd Bowles was asked if the Bucs signal caller looks better than he did in 2023.
“I think it’s early to say whether he’s better or not, but his ball placement the last few days has been very good,” Bowles said. “Understanding the offense and picking it up as fast as he has, and distributing it to the right places…He’s got to continue to do that.”
The Buccaneers signed offensive coordinator Liam Coen after losing Dave Canales to the Carolina Panthers following the 2023 season. Mayfield’s brief time with the Rams in 2022 allowed him to work with Coen at the end of the season making the quarterback-coordinator relationship much easier to adapt to.
And being that the familiarity is there for both sides, its good to see that Mayfield has been able to pick up the offense quickly.
Things will begin to heat up (no pun intended) at training camp when the pads come on for the first time Monday. We’ll see how things begin flowing then for Mayfield and the offense.
