Brutal.

The Cincinnati Bengals have lost offensive lineman Hakeem Adeniji to a torn pectoral muscle, head coach Zac Taylor announced Tuesday.

Taylor did not give a timetable for Adeniji’s recovery, but this is the type of injury that could end up costing him the entire 2021 season.

Adeniji, a 2020 sixth-round NFL Draft pick by way of the Kansas Jayhawks, appeared in 15 games (five starts at left tackle), earning a 51.6 PFF grade. He was unlikely to be a starter in 2021 with Jonah Williams and Riley Reiff manning both tackle spots, but this is still a big blow to the depth at this position.

This means Fred Johnson, fourth-round rookie D’Ante Smith and possibly second-round rookie Jackson Carman (college tackle drafted to play guard in Cincinnati) will compete for the backup tackle spots.

Here’s to hoping for a speedy recovery for Adeniji and he’s able to make it back at some point in 2021.
